heritage storage days

Between 7-10 September, Heritage Open Days runs events around England, throwing open the doors to historic buildings and monuments that are normally closed or have restricted access to the public.

The Council of Europe and the European Commission created European Heritage Days in 1991 in order to raise awareness of the need to preserve Europe’s rich and diverse cultural history. Each country runs the festival in its own way and, from 1994, England has been running Heritage Open Days.

Over 700 events took place in 1994 and this has risen, as the festival flourishes, to over 5,000 in 2017! The September weekend spans the public, private and voluntary sectors with months of hard work involved in preparing properties for visitors. The properties range from private houses to a brewery and from sewage works to the Bedfordshire Archives.

Not a lot of people know this, but… Restore’s Heritage Storage Scheme, set up in collaboration with the National Conservation Service, is housed in first world war bomb-proof aircraft hangars at Upper Heyford in Oxfordshire.

We’ve always liked the fact that we care for nationally and internationally important artefacts and objects from galleries, museums and conservation charities all over the country in adapted buildings that are scheduled historical monuments themselves. Yes, that’s right. The hangars at Upper Heyford are listed and protected by English Heritage.

Why not come for your own tour of the premises, whenever is convenient for you. It can be like a private heritage open day set up just for you!
