The Sky’s Not The Limit, After All

News of British Airways’ seemingly stratospheric £183m fine from the ICO for a serious data breach in 2018 should have us all nervously checking our data security…

In a recent Datashred blog we reported that the ICO were poised to hand down more fines to companies found to be in breach of the GDPR and DPA 2018. British Airways (BA) appears to be the first high profile business to feel the full weight of the law. In truth, the amount is shocking and BA will likely appeal – after all, who wants to make a whopping fine part of the everyday cost of doing business?

On the other hand, one should bear in mind that the personal data of half a million BA customers was stolen from their website and mobile app AND that the proposed fine represents 1.5% of turnover, not the maximum 4% that can be imposed.

For many observers it will be an interesting – and concerning – test case. Whether it goes to appeal or not, it will be a revelation of how strong the ICO’s powers now are and, perhaps, a realisation that the GDPR and DPA 2018 are forces to be reckoned (and complied) with.

While BA’s woes stem from a digital breach, the news serves to highlight the importance of how you handle customer and business data, regardless of the format. Every step of the handling process – from capture to storage to disposal – needs to be hacker-proof, watertight. If the BA story has caused a flicker of anxiety about your own data protection set-up and compliance, it could be time to call in the professionals to conduct an audit of your systems and processes.
