With an energetic lunchtime, keynote speech, Peggy Winton, President of AIIM set out the overarching trends of the data management industry at this week's AIIM conference. Promoting the phrase "Intelligent Data Management" Peggy shared new research that showed how organisations are managing their data.
The day was full of facts, soundbites and industry ideas. We were also reminded on more than one occasion that net paper use isn't in decline, it is just declining as a percentage of all data captured. A stark reminder that to remain agile, organisations really need to think about the best way to digitalise their back office systems, that complements the use of paper where necessary or unavoidable.
Vijay Magon at C-Cube Solutions introduced his pressure sensitive clipboard, a device some of our NHS clients use on the wards. This clipboard holds normal paper which you write on with a normal pen, which immediately gets transferred to an electronic replica, which you can then save as a PDF. Nothing is saved onto the clipboard itself. While perfect for short page forms of 1-4 pages in length, Vijay stressed that if your document is longer, then the real solution would be to create a dynamic online form.
Preservica talked about long term digital preservation, and how it's not only important to save files for archiving, but ensuring that they are always updated and saved in readable forms, so the information is not lost.
My favourite talk was from Aino Kuivalahti of OP Financial Group in Finland who discussed how her company has really embraced the digitalisation of the back office processes, and the commitment to making the customer experience with a relatively large organisation as nimble and agile as the smaller competitors. She talked about the long term objectives of the bank, and the benefits of being a co-operative without the shareholder pressures. She also talked about high performing teams, and motivating them with a common objective, even when the work could be considered dull.
If you missed the conference, there are some great resources available for free on the AIIM website, including a webinar on Wednesday 27 June, The New Workflow Imperative: An integrated automation strategy connecting process automation strategy connecting process automation to the business: http://info.aiim.org/the-new-workflow-imperative
