Law firms announcing a permanent shift to homeworking

On the 25th August, the law firm Linklaters announced that it will allow its staff to work half the time remotely, permanently. This is one of the first major law firms that have changed their business model following the pandemic. Others have included DLA Piper and Baker McKenzie.

This was almost unthinkable at the start of 2020 when city centre offices were valued as essential to close-knit cultures and paper-based process which law firms were built upon.

To achieve this, entire workflows are being redesigned, mainly digitally and with automation. Creating these workflows is key to productivity, and allow agile, effective working. However, it doesn’t come without risk. For example, how do law firms ensure if staff print at home they know how to dispose of highly confidential documents?

A lot of law firms struggled during the pandemic, mainly due to the knock-on effects of their clients’ woes. Redundancies are taking place across the sector, but these are due to longer-term efficiencies that are made through digitalisation. For example, digital documents remove the need for manual data entry when automated workflows are created.

Other longer-term savings can through rethinking the purpose of an office. And many law firms are thinking of downsizing as leases come to an end.

It’s an exciting time for the industry, as the pandemic has forced its hand to change at a pace it simply wouldn’t have done otherwise. Success will come from grabbing the box and thinking outside it and creating long-term digital workflows.
