Celebrating Libraries

Celebrating Libraries

This week, 8-13 October, has been Libraries Week. Libraries are an essential part of every school, college, university, and many different workplaces. Public libraries used to be a common and well loved sight in towns around the country. We need to keep libraries, but to do that we need to use them – hence Libraries Week and a chance to promote how libraries bring communities together, helping combat loneliness and thereby enhancing mental health.

A good library is all things to all people. It has fiction and non-fiction, music and talking books for borrowing; reference books and a quiet area in which to study them; it has the day’s papers, a coffee machine and a couple of sofas. There’s a vibrant children’s library with Baby Rhyme Time and Toddler Story Time; computers with free wifi access and free instruction to improve your digital skills. There are book clubs to join and Knit & Knatter sessions, talks from local authors and mobile libraries in vans.

But libraries have had to evolve to withstand funding cuts. Many are now run purely by volunteers with little funding on an uncertain annual basis – some run cafés, baby massage groups, hairdressing salons and host mobile cinema screenings to increase funds.

Librarians and Records Managers are both information managers, simply in different forms. Both involve file management and storage and digital tracking and, with their rows of racking, Restore’s archives and deep storage bear striking similarities to cavernous libraries of old.

If you’d like to see one of our impressive storage facilities for yourself just call us on 03300 376 323. We’d be delighted to show you round. Wherever you are, there’s sure to be Restore Records Management site nearby…
