The sky’s the limit?

Back in June 2018 British Airways (BA) was the subject of a data hack that harvested the personal and credit card information of hundreds of thousands of customers and employees. The confidential data was being covertly collected over the course of two months before BA was notified of the breach – by a third party. BA quickly reported itself to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) and co-operated fully with the investigation.

The ICO have recently handed BA a £20 million fine because of their ‘severe failing’ in not noticing the breach and having inadequate security systems in place. The fine, although the largest in the UK to date, is not quite as hefty as the originally intended pre-COVID-19 fine of £183 million. Since 2018 BA has made ‘considerable improvements’ to its security systems.
