Relocation of offices and new internal libary

Client: Victoria and Albert Museum
Sector: Heritage Relocation

The V&A made major repairs to their building and to refreshed the staff/conservator office areas. The project involved the refurbishment of three existing areas to allow for the consolidation of several Curatorial Offices. It also included the creation of a new centralised internal library for the office. The offices identified for refurbishment were:

  • South East Asia (Asia)
  • Sculpture, Ceramic and Glass Office (SCG)
  • Furniture Texture & Fashion (PFTF)
  • Metalwork.

The decant works included clearance of all office areas with some items being removed for recycling. The majority of items were removed for temporary off site storage at our Royal Docks storage facility in East London. Filing and IT equipment from all affected areas were packed and stored in our warehouse.

The core decant works were delivered over a three-week period. Working hours were restricted due to the day to day operations of the Museum and its staff, so our teams had to work to a daily target schedule with hourly reporting on progress provided by our on site team leaders to the programme/project management team. Access to the office/library areas was also restricted by allowed working hours as well as the height of vehicles able to pass under the archway.

  • 2,650 linear metres of filing, books and other items packed, loaded on vehicles and moved to our warehouse
  • Removal of workstations, meeting tables/chairs, antique chairs, cabinets/racks, glazed museum display cabinets and wall mounted shelving to our warehouse
  • Internal relocation of approx. 50no filing cabinets (via stairs) to a staging area within the museum
  • Decommission and removal of identified desktop IT – packed and relocated to our warehouse
    Items cleared for recycling.

As well removing a significant number of V & A assets to our secure storage facility, we also relocated a large number of client assets internally on site to agreed holding/staging areas whilst the building/refurbishment works were taking place. The items included:

  • Artworks
  • Key safes
  • Cabinets
  • Whiteboards, pinboards and clocks
  • Plants.

Following completion of the refurbishment works we delivered all items back to site. Library racking/shelving was rebuilt along with furniture and related items. Packed library stock was return by area in sequential order to allow the quick and efficient unpacking of all books and related material to the library areas. The whole programme was delivered on time and in line with agreed budgets.
