University of St Andrews – Main Library Refurbishment

Client: University of St Andrews
Sector: Heritage

The University of St Andrews required a Move Management company to provide relocation services prior to the refurbishment of level 4 within their Main Library building earlier this year. We were approached to provide a proposal for this move due to their previous experience engaging us for similar library projects in the past.

There were several challenges to be over-come during this project.

The building was open to users through-out the move therefore the crew needed to be aware of any noise disruption that their work may cause.

There was also a requirement to work at height as the new racking was 2.5m in height. We ensured that the crew had kick steps to work at the height of the shelves safely.

Lift access had to be managed by our site supervisor as the building was still being used by university staff during the move. We managed this by briefing the crew on the procedure for lift use whist ensuring the target LM per day was met. Crates moves were arranged during “quieter times” during the working day to minimise disruption to staff.

The project required 2000 linear metres of stock (mainly print journals and reference works) to be packed in sequence on level four and then transferred to the basement area of the library via one lift.

The stock was then required to be unpacked in sequential order onto bespoke electronic mobile shelving system. We liaised with university staff and the racking company to plan the most effective way to load the new shelving.

Integration of stock was completed in close partnership with library teams and the Harrow Green supervisor, ensuring all books were unpacked in the correct order.

The Restore Harrow Green supervisor reported to university library staff on a daily basis to provide updates on the progress of the project and daily target LM progress.

The project was completed on time, within budget and to the total satisfaction of the University Library team.
