Collection Relocation for Redevelopment

Client: National Slate Museum
Sector: Public Sector

The National Slate Museum, part of the Unesco World Heritage Site for the Slate Landscape of North West Wales, is completing a redevelopment project to preserve its Grade 1 buildings and its globally significant collections. A key aspect of the project involved relocating thousands of historical items within the museum’s vast collection. The task was complex, with items varying in size and delicacy, including some large, intricate wooden patterns used in the slate industry.

Our team was entrusted with this critical relocation, ensuring that each item was meticulously packed, labelled, and safely transported to new locations, both within the museum’s premises and to temporary external storage. The relocation took place over seven weeks, with a team of ten specialists working daily to ensure the careful handling of the collection, including large objects that required specialised machinery for safe transport.

One of the major challenges was the lack of space within the current workshop buildings, which will be undergoing significant conservation and renovation works.

Additionally, some of the objects, such as the wooden patterns used in mold-making for the metal cogs, were large (some up to 8 feet) and fragile. These items required careful planning and transport equipment, including toe jacks, machine-moving skates, and plywood boards for delicate handling.

Our team worked in close collaboration with the museum to plan and execute the relocation process smoothly. Using detailed floor plans and project management tools, we developed an effective move strategy that allowed for both the large and small items to be handled with care. Equipment was used to navigate the challenges of moving large, heavy objects across tight spaces and uneven surfaces. This included the use of Hiab cranes, 5-tonne forklifts with 6ft forks, and other machinery to ensure the delicate nature of some items was preserved during the move.

Despite the potential for unforeseen obstacles, such as the fragility of certain objects and the need for tight coordination, our team remained adaptable. Through careful planning, precise execution, and the use of specialised moving techniques, all items were successfully relocated without incident, allowing the museum to proceed with its vital redevelopment work.

The relationship built between our team and the museum’s staff was invaluable, creating a tight-knit team that worked together to overcome challenges and ensure the successful relocation.

Osian, a collections assistant at the museum, praised the team “For 7 weeks, we’ve been hard at work decanting the National Slate Museum’s collection and we couldn’t have done it without the incredible team from Restore Harrow Green,” said Osian.

“Under the guidance of Dave Ryan, we’ve been absolutely amazed by the sheer amount of work they’ve accomplished and the speed at which they operate. Their expertise is unmatched – they truly know their craft. But more than their professionalism is their kindness, warmth, humour, and laughter that have carried us through this monumental task. They have made a challenging project not just manageable but genuinely enjoyable.”

The relocation achieved the museum’s original objectives—securing the safe and efficient storage of its collection in order for the buildings to undergo conservation. Moreover, the entire process was carried out smoothly and securely, contributing to the seamless continuation of the renovation works without delays.
