Lloyd George Record Digitisation FAQs

Lloyd George records (also referred to as Lloyd George notes or sometimes envelopes) contain details about patients’ medical history that can date back several decades, depending on the individual. Older records will be paper-based and therefore at greater risk of loss or damage, so there’s a growing movement among NHS Trusts to digitise these important, often sensitive, documents as part of the organisation’s ongoing digital transformation. This means that physical copies can then be securely destroyed.

The greatest benefit of digitising Lloyd George records is the ensured safety of patient records. In their paper form, these files are at high risk of damage and can even be lost or stolen. Scanning these records to an online system ensures that patient history is quick and easy to access by all healthcare professionals.

Lloyd George records are named after the UK’s former Prime Minister David Lloyd-George, whose government introduced the National Insurance Act in 1911. As part of this, every UK citizen was given a unique National Insurance number, which would be assigned to their individual medical records, and they subsequently became known as Lloyd George records.

The time taken to transfer your Lloyd George notes into digital files depends on factors including the type of documents, size, quality and format required for the digital files – including how they will be integrated into your digital records management system. Discuss with our experts.

Following Lloyd George scanning, your documents will be uploaded to a digital system. Consider importing your newly digitised files to DocuWare or EDMonline™, our document management systems. Alternatively, we’ll upload your files to your existing system.

We comply with DCB0129 regulation measures to ensure the safety of your clinical documents.

After digitising Lloyd George records, we dispose of any confidential files with our DataShred service, which ensures all documents are destroyed securely and safely. Alternatively, we can return the physical records to you or put them in long-term with our records storage service.
