Earth Day 2017

Since its inception in 1970 Earth Day has been celebrated annually by people worldwide. Conceived as a way to spread a message of environmentalism and peace to a global audience, Earth Day has gone from strength to strength with events being held from Beijing to Los Angeles. It serves to remind people that environmentalism has been an urgent and pressing issue for many years.

Whilst it is possible now to chortle at the predictions made by various field leaders and experts on the very first Earth Day; “by 1985 air pollution will have reduced the amount of sunlight reaching the Earth by one half” and “By the year 2000, thirty years from now, every continent with the exception of Western Europe, North America and Australia, will be in famine.” The very fact that we can look back and laugh at such outlandish claims should only serve to highlight the dire predicament that the people of 1970 saw themselves to be in.

Whilst it may be easy to dismiss such statements as cynical scaremongering in order to grab the public’s attention it appears much more likely that these were statements of genuine fear from people desperately trying to highlight the urgency of the issue to the public. As a public relations exercise making the transition from environmentalism as a hippy concept peddled by flower children to a serious public concern has been a success. This has been helped largely by Earth Day. The drip, drip, drip effect over the years has culminated in environmentalism being one of the hot button topics of the modern age; firmly rooted in the national consciousness.

PHS Data Solutions has taken on the challenge of creating a modern, environmentally sustainable document shredding service with gusto. As a holder of the ISO14001 certification they are constantly changing and updating processes to keep as green as possible. Whether this is routing vehicles based on carbon emissions or tramping out into a muddy field to plant a couple of hundred trees; they make sure the environment remains a priority in all decision making processes.

All of the paper collected is recycled and sent to paper mills to be reconstituted into loo roll, tissues, or indeed more paper. Zero paper ever reaches a landfill. Simply using any service provided by Datashred, Records Management or Capital Capture gets you one step closer to environmental sustainability.

It is always a challenge for any large business to show to the public that they are committed to the environment. Beyond a certain size it can appear that a business is too big to care about the birds and the trees. PHS Data Solutions aims to change that by showing how businesses of any size can make a real difference to the environment with a genuine care for it. So whilst you read this maybe just take a glance around your office/break room/private yacht and really, really think about where everything came from and where it will eventually end up.

Because if it’s a landfill or the ocean (there’s currently a mass of coalesced plastic roughly the size of Texas making its way lazily round the Pacific) then maybe you can do something different to change that. Earth Day began as a grass roots campaign started by the little guy shaking his fist at a global injustice. Continuing its message means a change in mindset for individuals everywhere. To paraphrase JFK; “Ask not what your planet can do for you but what you can do for your planet.” For information on Earth Day and how you can take action, visit the official page at
