Global Recycling Day: it’s today!

Officially recognised by the United Nations, 2025 sees the eighth Global Recycling Day being celebrated on 18 March. Consider this a call to action!

Ready to upgrade your team, department or server?

Before you get someone in to get rid of your old IT equipment, think: is this high-tech kit really waste, and do you really want it to be buried in landfill, accessible to all and sundry, contributing toxins and microplastics to the soil and water table in the area?

Really?

Individually, business-wide and globally, we need to make friends with redundant devices and IT equipment and regard them as an opportunity.

Global Recycling Day calls waste of any kind the ‘Seventh Resource’, and organisers highlight that it puts some power back into our hands in the face of the planet reacting to being stripped of resources and burgeoning emissions in the atmosphere. The act of recycling is recognised in the UN’s Sustainable Goals for 2030 as a key component of the circular economy, an economy that currently prevents 700 million tonnes of CO2 emissions every year, and which is projected to increase to 1 billion tonnes, annually, by that 2030 deadline.

Restore Technology is a waste-positive business and recycling is the crux of our sustainable argument. Your obsolete IT assets become recycling assets, the seventh resource made of many of the earth’s core elements and re-usable in a multitude of ways.

Global Recycling Day has a twofold mission:

  • To tell world leaders that recycling is simply too important not to be a global issue, and that a common, joined-up approach to recycling is urgently needed.
  • To ask people across the planet to think resource, not waste, when it comes to the goods around us.

What’s recyclable about IT kit?

What isn’t, is more to the point.

Devices are typically made from plastics, glass, steel and aluminium at their base, with precious metals such as platinum, gold and silver inside the intricate workings of the motherboard. As a real-life working example: the Royal Mint has a South Wales-based facility specifically for chemically extracting gold from computer motherboards.

And IT kit is recyclable in other ways, not just in disassembly. Sometimes when a company gets in touch with us for secure e-recycling, we find their outgoing assets have residual value. The most environmentally beneficial approach is to securely erase any data, refurbish and upgrade, then reintroduce them to market through Restore Technology’s channels and unparalleled contacts. The assets get a second life, and the revenue generated can often offset the cost of the service.

And… even if you no longer need your tech, schools, community groups and charities are often crying out for these gateways to opportunity. Again, we ensure any residual data is securely wiped from each item, we refurbish and then co-ordinate a hand over with you.

IT recycling can help your organisation reduce its environmental impact, potentially generate revenue, ensure data security and support sustainability goals.

How you benefit from secure IT recycling

Sustainability

whether remarketed, upgraded and re-used, donated or disassembled, IT recycling with us ensures you are stepping firmly into the circular economy, and boosting your sustainability credentials with all your stakeholders.

Security

tracked and audited from your workplace to our facility, we will wipe all and any remaining data from your IT assets, even if they are going to be broken down into recyclable constituent parts. Everything we process for you is recorded and guaranteed by a promptly issued certificate of destruction after each transaction with us.

Compliance

the WEEE Directive and GDPR hold sway over all your data-bearing assets. The former to ensure you dispose of your IT devices responsibly, preferably through e-waste recycling, and the latter, to make sure your confidential data is fully safeguarded.
