Practical sustainability

Big Energy Saving Week runs from 17-25 January, and its aim is to help people adopt new habits around energy consumption, to save money, and be more aware of cutting emissions and working and living sustainably.

Understanding the impact of our plan

In the spirit of awareness-raising and transparency that we believe are the foundation of sustainability, here are the strides Restore Datashred is making towards Net Zero. As professional data shredders we are already major recyclers of paper, supporting the recycling industry with over 50,000 tonnes of paper shreds every year. In addition to paper, of course, we also recycle cardboard, textiles, plastics, e-media and e-devices. This benefits not only impacts on the environment, but also, in a double win-win, your sustainability goals.

But what are we doing behind the scenes to cut energy or fossil fuel use, emissions and general consumption? What are we doing that’s practical, sustainable and continuing to set the standard for environmental responsibility?

We have a Carbon Reduction Plan

For several years now, we have been actioning a multi-layered strategy to decarbonise operations and, not surprisingly for a business with nationwide presence and a large number and range of vehicles, our focus is on our fleet. Cars, vans, secure collection vehicles and our mobile shredding trucks are the primary source of emissions for our business, known as Scope 1 emissions.

Our Carbon Reduction Plan involves a comprehensive transition from, for example, achieving an all-electric (EV)/hybrid company car policy in 2024, to expanding our on-site electric charging infrastructure, and using Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) as a transition fuel for our heavy goods vehicles (HGVs).

Understanding the impact of our plan

Precisely what are Scope 1 emissions? These are emissions from sources that an organisation – Restore Datashred in this instance – owns or controls directly. For us, the primary source of Scope 1 emissions, as stated above, is the fuel we burn in our fleet. Since our gamut of vehicles forms our core strategic operational focus, we have targeted them directly, as follows.

  • Company cars: we achieved a transition to 100% EV/hybrid company car policy in 2024.
  • Vans and infrastructure: we are moving to an EV fleet for vans where range and cost make this practicable, and have supported this change by installing EV chargers across our sites. We continue to scale this operation upwards.
  • Heavy goods vehicles (HGVs): where EV technology is not yet viable for heavy-duty requirements, we have been investing in HVO and continue to roll out installation of HVO tanks across our portfolio of sites. At our Coventry and Optima Park facilities, for example, our digital logging and calibrated pumping systems make sure every litre of renewable fuel is tracked with precision, which provides the high-quality data found on your customer portal that you need for your own sustainability audits.

How our Plan helps you reduce your footprint, increase your sustainability

You enjoy the ripple effect from our reductions!

Scope 3 emissions are those that occur indirectly up stream in your supplier and services chain and they need to be accounted for in any carbon reporting your business undertakes. Because Restore Datashred is proactively switching fuels – HVO reduces net CO2 emissions by up to 90% – and purchasing more electric vehicles, we are directly helping you lower your total carbon footprint and meet your own sustainability goals, not that you will notice this of course. Our transition is designed to be invisible to you, impactful for the planet.

The transition [to HVO] was seamless… same process, cleaner fuel.
