Students from E-ACT Blackley Academy Visit Restore Datashred Manchester
Recycling plays a vital role in protecting our environment, conserving natural resources, and reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill. As global challenges around sustainability continue to grow, educating young people about responsible waste management has never been more important.
By helping students from E-ACT Blackley understand how recycling works and the impact their everyday actions can have, we empower the next generation to make more sustainable choices and contribute to a circular economy. Initiatives that bring learning to life through real-world experiences are key to inspiring lasting behavioural change and building a more environmentally conscious future.

We were delighted to welcome a group of students from E-ACT Blackley Academy for a day of learning, creativity, and hands-on experience at Restore Datashred, Manchester. The Restore Datashred Fibre team, led by Andy Keane, Fibre Procurement Manager, began working with E‑ACT Blackley Academy to support their paper waste management.
The team ensures paper fibre is collected, processed, and reintroduced into the recycling cycle helping to reduce waste, support a more sustainable circular economy, and enable customers to achieve their ESG and cost-saving goals. Following the success of this partnership, we are now working with additional schools within the network to collect their paper waste.

To bring this work to life, a group of students were invited for a behind-the-scenes visit to see recycling in action. The visit was planned as a reward for taking part in a recycling competition, where students were challenged to create something using paper and other recycled materials for Global Recycling Day.
We were blown away by the results — from a cardboard robot to a paper garden, showcasing fantastic creativity and imagination. Each entry highlighted not only artistic talent but also a real understanding of how everyday materials can be reused and repurposed. The competition was a brilliant way to encourage students to think differently about waste, showing how recycling can be both practical and creative, while inspiring them to make more sustainable choices in their everyday lives.
Global Recycling Day
During their visit, students gained a clear understanding of how recycling works in practice, especially the importance of paper recycling. They learned how paper is collected, sorted and processed into new materials, showing how fibres can be reused multiple times when recycled correctly.
The day also highlighted recycling beyond paper, with students exploring how materials such as cardboard, mixed recyclables and food waste are handled. They saw how each stream is separated and processed, reinforcing the importance of reducing contamination to maximise recycling rates.

The children took part in quizzes, enjoyed some well-earned treats, and asked plenty of thoughtful questions throughout the day, showing a real enthusiasm for the topic.
The group also had the opportunity to go behind the scenes with a tour of the depot, seeing first-hand what happens to materials once they’re collected. From large-scale sorting processes to the preparation of materials for recycling or recovery, the visit brought the entire journey to life and demonstrated the scale and impact of responsible waste management.
