Celebrating Earth Day: 22 April 2026

‘Our Power, Our Planet’ is the Earth Day organisation’s call to action this year, powering us up to draw together in collective community action for Earth’s health and wellbeing.

Looking at the doom-laden news cycle it is all too easy to lose sight of the innovations, care and sheer good that many humans enact every day. Since 1970, Earth Day organisation has been one of those good actors, mobilising across the continents and achieving significant victories in the adoption, globally, of sustainable, Earth-friendlier ways of living and doing business. Their premise is pretty simple: small, consistent actions add up to big change. By working collectively, every action counts.

Earth Day

Over the past 50 years or so the organisation has been responsible for:

Hundreds of millions of trees

being planted as part of the foundation of the Canopy Project in areas such as Madagascar and Tanzania

Green school grants

and climate education across 149 countries

Encouraging 36 million

clean-up volunteers in the Great Global Clean-up

Creating the knowledge base

for several pieces of government legislation, world-wide, surrounding clean air, clean water, and endangered species.

About Earth Day

Earth Day organisation also promotes positive news about how science and technologies are still discovering and working for the good of the planet, despite the impression the news cycle might give. New tech and science breakthroughs Earth Day has reported on recently (9 February 2026) include:

New processes that can break down PFAS (forever chemicals), particularly in water

Species discovery, which rose to 16,000 a year between 2015-2020, and that rate is only increasing. A mindboggling figure that only serves to emphasise how little we know of the planet we now need to protect…

In 2025, solar power in communities and businesses accounted for the majority of electricity generated in countries such as the USA and China.

How secure shredding services go hand in hand with Earth Day’s core message

It may seem like we’re reaching here for a way to link our professional Restore Recycle services with Earth Day organisation’s planet awareness and sustainability.

But hold up, as we really can contribute to both your ESG and environmental goals and the planet’s needs. Here’s how we support the values and aims of Earth Day.

1. We make sustainability a priority

Re-using, re-purposing and recycling – paper and a huge gamut of other materials – are some of the easiest activities for giving purpose to and informing many organisational commitments and are values that your customers and colleagues appreciate. These activities are exactly the type of collective actions that build towards larger change, tying closely into Earth Day’s key premise, above. We have developed Restore Recycle to enable just such responsible disposal methods.

2. We reduce environmental impacts through secure paper shredding

In 2025, for instance, we sent 57,000 tonnes of paper shreds to be recycled and our planet reaped the benefits like this.

Producing 1 tonne of virgin office-grade paper requires approximately:

  • 24 trees
  • 54,000 litres of water
  • 3,000kWh of energy produced by electricity, gas, coal or biomass fuel

Producing 1 tonne of recycled paper requires approximately:

  • 0 trees
  • 1.2 tonnes of wastepaper, eg, paper shreds
  • 27,000 litres of water
  • Halves energy consumption
  • Prevents 600kg of CO2 from going into Earth’s atmosphere

You can do the sums. Secure paper shredding, with Restore Recycle’s guarantee of recycling, allows for a lot of resources and pollution to be saved, plenty of waste to be recycled within the circular economy – the absolute point of sustainability.

3. We deliver benefits from recycling your securely shredded confidential documents, and other recyclable waste materials

We are a major recycling business and, as you can see above, we regard waste as a resource. Part of our business model is our firm promise to send 100% of all your shredded confidential documents to UK paper mills for recycling into paper products. We can do this to paper up to seven times over before the pulp loses strength. At Restore Recycle, we also collect and dispose of metals, plastics, cardboard, textiles and obsolete IT assets, breaking the latter down into their component parts, such as their valuable precious metals and enabling us to dispose responsibly of the toxins used in IT manufacture.

Again, a strong part of our business model is that we always aim to recycle all materials we collect, either through shredding and manufacturing into new or into an energy source, for example, or by repurposing and reusing in different settings, often to the benefit of local communities.

4. We practise what we preach (although we’re not preaching!)

Like you, we have our own ESG strategy, called Restoring our World, in which we lay out our plans for balancing our environmental, community and business inputs and outputs and achieving Net Zero by 2035. In the background to the green benefits secure shredding brings to your business, we are working in areas including: introducing alternative-fuelled vehicles throughout our extensive fleet, already using e-forklifts in our warehouses, partnering with PlanetMark™ to help us set and adhere to energy and fuel reduction targets, planting trees and working with local and international communities to help improve lives and outlooks.

And, of course, in trying to follow good practice, these steps contribute to further reduced CO2 emissions and more sustainable collections, systems and processes for you – do you use our paperless account management Shred Smart portal, or have you tried reaching out to us via our new online customer form?

5. We are fully accredited

  • Licensed by the Environment Agencies in all four countries of the UK
  • ISO 14001 for upholding environmental standards and legislation
  • ISO 9001 for best practice across management
  • BS EN 15713 European shredding standard
  • BS 7858 staff security vetting standard
  • ISO 27001 for information security and data protection
  • In 2020, we were recognised as the Paper Recycling Business of the Year in the Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management awards.

It all adds up

Our eco-friendly shredding practices all add up to helping you meet Earth Day’s ‘Our Power, Our Planet’ theme for 2026: taking small, collective actions that, together, build to creating change in attitudes, behaviours and to the endless doom-loop of bad news in the mainstream media. By combining regulatory compliance with GDPR, Simpler Recycling and the WEEE Directive with your, and our, ESG goals, we help create a win-win scenario for people AND planet.
