Following our highly successful launch of Restore Recycle early last year, we’re really pleased to welcome waste specialist, Kate, to the team, to help us in our mission for sustained growth and growing sustainability.
Fast facts

Where are you based?
Based down in sunny Devon, my ‘home’ depot is Bedwas, though I’ll be popping into our Optima Park Head Office in London fairly often, too. My role as Total Waste Manager is actually national, so I’ll be covering plenty of miles across the country! That said, being based in the South West, I’m really looking forward to getting out on the road locally to visit our SW clients and see how I can support them firsthand.
What’s your role at Restore Datashred?
I’ve joined Datashred in the exciting new role of Total Waste Manager at Restore Recycle.

What does your job entail?
Since 1 April last year, government initiative, Simpler Recycling, has made it a requirement for businesses of 10 employees or more to separate general waste into streams to maximise recycling potential. My job is to help customers understand their responsibilities, set up compliant recycling systems and promote sustainability – in short, offering a total waste service (on top of data shredding), with plenty of ‘out of the box’ thinking (which is absolutely up my street)!
Getting to know you

How did you start working in the recycling and waste world?
I started in shredding and then, when I had my first daughter, I took a break. When she was seven months old, I approached a waste company local to me, to work with them independently in sales and account management and it kind of went from there… After I while I had created a new career for myself, taking my baby everywhere with me. That baby is now 10 and obsessed with waste and recycling!
What’s the thing you like most about working in this industry?
I love the fact recycling has a purpose for good, of course, but it is the people who work across the industry I love the most. Everyone has the same thinking and drive to do something positive and responsible for the future of the planet (and people!).

What made you join Restore Datashred as Total Waste Manager?
It is an opportunity for me to get stuck into something new, helping Datashred grow this part of the business – and, believe me, it can be expanded from so many angles – as well as guiding colleagues and customers in new directions, which I love doing.
What’s one thing people would be surprised to learn about recycling or waste management that you’ve learnt so far?
For me, it’s waste crime, one of the UK’s most profitable illegal activities. It’s a shocker how many companies try to move waste themselves without the correct licences to do so. This is how fly tipping has got so out of hand. Think of the vast waste dump in an Oxfordshire field that made the national headlines late last year, a discovery that is only the tip of the iceberg of this type of devastation, which is happening all over the country. It devastates local communities who can’t open windows in summer for the smell and fear of pests, it leaches toxins into the soil and water table, and kills wildlife and habitats.

When you’re not thinking about waste streams and recycling, what do you like doing?
I love spending ‘girly’ time with my two daughters, aged eight and ten. We often head out for lunch together, and they certainly keep me on my toes—they’ve even managed to get my hair tangled in brushes during their ‘makeover’ sessions! They also love a game of pool at our local pub; who knows, they might be the next Kelly Fisher! What more could a mum want?
Fun facts
