If only the current story of the disgusting waste mountain in Oxfordshire were a rarity.
The supreme irony of September’s Environment and Climate Change Committee report on the fight against waste crime being seriously “under-prioritised”*, is that, as it was being presented in the House of Lords, criminals were likely in the process of dumping hundreds of tonnes of waste and toxic materials in an Oxfordshire field. It’s the 150m-long, 5m-high waste mountain near Kidlington in the news currently.
BBC News article
Sadly, waste crime is not ‘news’.
In early 2023, we wrote about so-called businesses who make up 20% of the waste management sector, which are fronts for criminal gangs whose only risk, it seems, is being caught in the act (see “under-prioritised”, above) of illegal dumping – ‘fly-tipping’ does not capture the scale or damage of this activity. It is costing the government, according to the Environmental Services Association, £1billion a year to clear up but the financial pain is the last of it.
Not only is this large-scale dumping a lucrative part of organised crime syndicates, with all the implications and ramifications of illegal and anti-social activities such as money laundering, drug- and people-trafficking, but it is also an environmental catastrophe. Asbestos, arsenic, and mercury are just a few of the toxins that enter the soil, run off into waterways and leach into the water table, poisoning everything for humans, livestock and wildlife. Badly managed waste is a threat to us all. Choosing the seemingly cheap option can lead to planet and people paying the ultimate price, so it makes sense to take good care of how we dispose of our rubbish, including all our confidential waste.
How to combat the criminals
Always dispose through an accredited, Environment Agency-approved waste management business who guarantees your refuse is going to a licensed, legitimate location.
Toxic substances and components – many of them found in IT devices – must be handled appropriately, not in the household or office waste streams.
Anything legally considered ‘confidential’ should certainly not be going into general waste streams. Imagine all your customers’ and company’s data strewn across that Oxfordshire field?!
