Unlocking Digital Transformation in Healthcare

Three rounds of NHS funding that supports digital solutions

In 2023, there have been three announcements of funding available to support the NHS to mitigate some of the challenges it faces, including being able to cut patient waiting lists and speed up diagnosis.

The announcement of a £30m fund to support ICS’s to implement technological innovation, comes on top of The Urgent and Emergency Care Recovery Plan worth about £1bn and the £21 million AI diagnostics fund which is mainly to develop and implement AI that is used as part of the diagnosis process.

Here’s a quick timeline of the funding announcements:

  • January 2023 – The Urgent and Emergency Care Recovery Plan worth about £1bn.; this included funding for 10,000 virtual ward beds
  • September 2023 – A £21 million AI diagnostics fund
  • October 2023 – The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) will invest £30m in innovative technology.

The NHS’ world-leading ability to adopt new technology has already helped more than 210,000 patients be treated in their own homes through the rollout of virtual wards, and this new funding will allow the health service to adopt more innovations that improve patient care and reduce pressure on wider services
